The rack railway from Kalavryta to Diakofto, called “odontotos” in Greek, is one of the few rack trains in the world and a unique attraction for Greece. It was named “odontotos” after the mechanism that such trains use in order to climb safely on steep slopes. For the longest part of the journey the train moves on conventional rails. Howver, when the degree of slope exceeeds 10%, it moves on the rack rails, using suitable rack gears. The train crosses scenic areas of significant natural beauty. It covers the 22km journey at a speed of 30 to km/h on conventional rail and 6 to 15 km/h on rack rails.
Kalavryta and the greater area are a fascinating destination all year round, with numerous villages with friendly inhabitants, unique landscapes, a rich history and important monuments. Some of them are the Aghia Lavra Monastery where the Greek revolution of 1821 began, as well as the site of the Holocaust of 1943, during the German occupation. Kalavryta is famous for its ski center, one of the largest in Greece. It is also one of the few places in the world combining mountain skiing with swimming, with the sea at Diakofto being close.
Departing from Kalavryta, after a stop at the village of Kerpini, the trip continues for another 18 kilometers before its next stops. From that point it stops at Kato Zahlorou, a convenient stop for visitors of the Mega Spilaion Monastery, at Triklia and Niamata before it reaches its final destination Diakofto, at the shores of the Corinthian Gulf.
